Sharon D. Malone, M.D., FACOG, CNMP

Medical Director

Where I was born: Mobile, Alabama, 1959

Where I grew up: Alabama, Georgia, Texas

My childhood dream job: I decided I wanted to be a doctor in the third grade (which I hear is the ideal time for making lifelong career decisions).

Early influences: I lived next door to two hospitals—the first being a Civil War Marine Hospital that was converted to a TB hospital and the City Hospital, Mobile General.  Despite this bit of geographic serendipity, I was born at home.  My sister, Vivian Malone integrated the University of Alabama in 1963.  Her enrollment prompted George Wallace’s infamous Stand in the Schoolhouse Door.

College: Attended Emory University 1977-1978. Hated it. Transferred to Harvard 1978.  Graduated 1981 Cum laude with a degree in Psychology and Social Relations. Learned to love it.

Grad school: Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Really did love it.

My first job after college: Systems Engineer for IBM

My last job before Alloy: Partner, Foxhall Obstetrics & Gynecology, Washington DC

Favorite work experience (besides Alloy!):  I loved watching my patients as they progressed through all of the challenging aspects of life-- from puberty to childbearing and through the menopausal transition.  The more I learned from my patients (not just textbooks) the better doctor I became.

Why I’m so interested in women’s health: I love the wholeness of it all. No other field of medicine allows you to be a primary care doctor, a surgeon, a counselor and a friend all in one day.

One thing that always surprises people about me: I really love to cook, and I’ve never found a kitchen gadget that I didn’t need.

My favorite book, movie or TV show: A Mercy by Toni Morrison and The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. Favorite TV show: The Wire. And I'm an avid fan of old school R&B and Jazz, and love hearing live music in small venues.

My favorite way to relax: Cooking, playing tennis and walking with a group of my favorite girlfriends.

My happy place: Anywhere, sitting around a table with my girlfriends and talking for hours on end.
